    Introduction

    In the land that was sanctified by the touch of Shri Shivchhatrapati and is known as Dakshin Kashi on the banks of Panchganga, taking the legacy of the ideal social work of Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, Kolhapur Zilla Parishad is working for the development of rural areas in the district. Kolhapur district is located on the south-western plateau of the state of Maharashtra at 16°42′ north latitude and 74°15′ east longitude. The district is bordered by the Sahyadri range in the west, the Varna river in the north, the Krishna river in the east and the Belgaum district of Karnataka in the south. The area of ​​Kolhapur district is 7685 sq. km. which is 2.5 percent of the area of ​​the state. The main rivers flowing through the district are Krishna, Varna, Panchganga, Dudhganga, Vedganga, Hiranyakeshi and Ghataprabha. According to the 2011 census, the total population of the district is 38.76 lakhs and the rural population is 26.45. The district has 12 (10 Dongri and 2 non-Dongri) talukas, 12 Panchayat Samiti, 2 Municipal Corporations, 13 Municipal Councils and 1,025 Gram Panchayats.

    • Housing Scheme – Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, 16656 houses have been sanctioned to the district as well as 35513 houses have been sanctioned under the state sponsored Ramai, Shabari, Pardhi, Adim, Atal Construction Worker Housing Scheme, Modi Awas Yojana, Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Housing Scheme and Yashwantrao Chavan Mukta Vasahat Yojana, out of which 27951 houses have been completed and 7562 houses are in progress.

    • Under the Umed Abhiyan, 27467 self-help groups have been established today. In the year 2023-24, a loan of Rs. 391.17 crore has been disbursed to 11,638 groups. Also, a loan of Rs. 87.67 lakh has been disbursed to 237 women under the Pradhan Mantri Micro Food Upgrading Process Industry Scheme.

    • Under the National Rural Economic Transformation (NRETP) project of the Central and State Governments, a fund of Rs. 340.85 lakh has been approved for Kolhapur district for Kolhapuri Chappal Cluster on 18-10-2022, in which 240 women artisans have been included and new employment opportunities have been provided. This is the first initiative being implemented in the state and the products of skilled artisans will get fair price and their products will get higher price from the production unit development, which will increase their income.

    • On 15 August 2019, Prime Minister Hon. Narendra Modiji announced the Jal Jeevan Mission Scheme from the Red Fort.

    • The objective of this scheme is to provide quality, sustainable water supply of 55 liters per person per day throughout the year to all families in rural areas through functional tap connections under ‘Har Ghar Nal Se Jal’.

    • Under this scheme, a total of 1270 schemes worth Rs. 1475.00 crore have been approved in Kolhapur district and out of them, work orders have been given for 1217 schemes. Under this scheme, new additional capacity schemes have been included in addition to the existing usable schemes to supply clean water to the population of 55 liters per day per person by the year 2054. At present, the work of 377 schemes out of 1217 schemes has been completed.

    • Out of 683789 families in the district, 678908 have been provided with functional pipe connections and the Gram Panchayat is planning to complete the remaining pipe connections by March 2025.

    • In order to reduce the burden of the electricity bill of the scheme, net metering solar has been included in 364 schemes.

    • 31 schemes based on solar dual pump are included in the plan. Out of which 29 schemes have been completed and work on 2 schemes is in progress.

    • There are a total of 3265 schools and 3961 Anganwadis in the district and all of them have been provided with drinking water.

    • All 1192 villages in the district have become Open Defecation Free (ODF). Under Swachh Bharat Mission (GMB) Phase 2, 988 villages in the district have become Open Defecation Free Plus (ODF+).

    • One unit has been approved for each taluka under plastic waste management. Under this project, all the plastic in the taluka will be collected and managed scientifically.

    • A district-level project under the Pathdarshi Gobardhan Yojana has been approved at Gram Panchayat Mangaon, Taluka Hatkanangale and the objective of this project is to generate electricity and organic fertilizer from the waste collected from rural areas.

    • Under the initiative to prevent pollution of Panchganga river, in the year 2023-24, a Shri Ganesh idol and Nirmalya donation initiative was organized in all the villages of the district and a total of 282533 Shri Ganesh idols, including 279723 household and 2810 public, and 1424 trolleys and 214 bell carriages, were collected.
